Kate Weigel grew up in Eastern Maine on the land of the Wabanaki Confederacy, and maintains strong ties to her home there. She graduated from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development with a Bachelors of Fine Art in Studio Art, concentrating in sculpture. She got her start in construction and fabrication by building sets for student musicals and plays as a work study job, eventually working her way up to Master Carpenter. After a chunk of freelancing, artist residencies and extensive travel, she moved to the United Arab Emirates where she was a Visual Arts Global Academic Fellow on the new campus of NYU Abu Dhabi. After her time abroad, she found herself in Columbus, Ohio where she co-founded a cooperative for liberated learning for kids and teens ages 10-18. Later she served as an AmeriCorps Construction Crew Lead with Habitat for Humanity MidOhio, and continued her service in Moab, UT where she first learned natural building techniques with a local affordable housing organization, also deepening her understanding of permaculture. She remains in Moab on ancestral Ute and Pueblo land, working for the Housing Authority of Southeastern Utah where she teaches homeowners with low incomes how to cooperatively build their own homes. Kate has experience in a wide variety of industries including affordable housing, film, art, education, animal rescue, outdoor adventure and environmentalism. She is passionate about service, community building, and creating a more regenerative/sustainable world.
